Herbert Lythjohan Obituary

Herbert H. Lythjohan passed peacefully into the arms of Jesus on Sunday June 27th at the age of 88.

He is survived by his loving wife Doris, and sons Steven (Brenda) Lythjohan, Dale (Barbara) Lythjohan, and Michael (Ann) Lythjohan, grandchildren Danielle (Brett) Welch, Jessica (Bryan) Kozak, Karissa (Eric) Pigott, Victoria Lythjohan, Cassandra (Logan) Markko, Caroline Lythjohan, Madison Lythjohan, Rayne Lythjohan, step grandchildren Luke (Molly) Hietpas, Nicolaus Stengl, Lucas Stengl, and great grandchildren Brooklyn & Emmerlyn Pigott, Liv Hietpas.  He was preceded in death by his parents Carl and Stella Lythjohan, brother John Lythjohan, and sister Thelma Pankow.

Herb was born on March 29th, 1933 in Stoughton WI.   He grew up on the family farm outside of Cambridge WI, was a multi-sport athlete, and after graduation enlisted in the navy and served his country proudly on the USS Coral Sea during the Korean War conflict as an aviation electronics technician.  Herb fell head over heels in love with Doris Petersen on one of his military leaves back in Wisconsin, and they were married on August 24th, 1957.

Right out of the military, Herb was offered a minor league baseball contract as a pitcher, but he chose instead to provide for his family working for AT&T, and continued to work for them as well as Wisconsin Bell until he retired in 1992.

Herb was a man who believed that faith, family, and humble service to others were the meaning of a life well lived.

He (and Doris) were active members in many facets of their congregation (Faith Lutheran Church) in Appleton.

Herb was also very active giving back to the community as a Boy Scout Troop Leader for many years and was awarded the Silver Beaver award for distinguished service.

After retirement, Herb and Doris enjoyed many activities including keeping the birds (and many other animals) well fed, tending their garden, traveling south during the winters, serving others, and enjoying their grandchildren.

A celebration of Herb’s life will be celebrated on Saturday July 10th in Appleton.  Details can be found at https://www.valleyfh.com/current-obituaries .
