Arthur William Hopfensperger

Arthur William Hopfensperger, 78, died peacefully at his residence, with his family by his side on Sunday, July 28, 2019.  He was born in Appleton on December 7, 1940.  Art married Shirley Smith on September 28, 1963.  He was employed at Appleton Papers for 36 years serving as a member of the Safety Committee, as a Union Representative, Chief Steward and a member of the Union Contract Committee.  Art also worked part time for Valley Funeral Home, Gold Cross Ambulance (Lindies) and as an EMT at WIR.

Art served our country in the United States Army.  Art, along with his wife Shirley, continued his service to our nation and community by being active in both the American Legion and VFW.  Art served as American Legion Vice-Commander for the state of WI and was member of the Scarlet Guard at Appleton Post 38.  Art was always at the ready to march in parades, attend military honors funerals and organize/participate in Memorial Day and Veteran’s Day observances across the Fox Valley.

Art was a devoted husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather.  You would often see him at his grandchildren’s band concerts, dance recitals, school activities or on the sidelines at soccer, football, basketball or baseball games.  Art was dedicated to family and took care of his father until his passing in 1987.  Art continued to take care of his mother Sylvia and her twin sister Sadie.

Art loved to play cribbage and Sheepshead with his family and rummy with his mother Sylvia.

Art is survived by his wife Shirley; mother Sylvia; three children: Angie, Annette (Kurt), Stephen (Shelly); seven grandchildren: Jessica (Brian), Conner, Rutger, Erin, Tara (Nic), Amy and Justin; and four great grandchildren Keeran, Keyrah, Lily Anna and Kingston as well as many sisters/brothers in-law, close friends and cousins. 

Art is preceded in death by his father Eugene Hopfensperger; mother in-law Cecelia Smith; and Aunt Sadie Hopfensperger.

Memorial service for Art will be 6:00 PM on Thursday August 1, 2019 at CALVARY CHAPEL, 2136 E. Newberry Street, Appleton, with Pastor Dwight Douville officiating.  Visitation will be held Thursday afternoon beginning at 4:00 until 5:45, with the memorial service to begin at 6:00 PM, with full military honors to follow.
